To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that explores the themes of racial injustice and prejudice in the American South during the 1930s.
The story follows Scout the narrator of the story, her brother Jem, and her father Atticus Finch. Atticus is a lawyer who defends an innocent black man accused of rape. Although he successfully proves the man is not guilty, the all-white jury convicts him anyway.
The book invokes strong feelings of unfairness and injustice. The mockingbird is a metaphor for innocence and the killing is Scout’s loss of it.
